SAMDECH KROM PREAH: SAMDECH HUN SEN STILL PITIES AND WANTS TO HELP ME DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER LU LAYSRENG PREPARED TO APOLOGIZE TO SAMDECH KROM PREAH
“Phnom Penh: Samdech Krom Preah Norodom Ranariddh, the President of the Norodom Ranariddh Party, told Rasmei Kampuchea on the afternoon of 4 July that he is very delighted to have learnt that Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen still “pities him, likes him, and wants to help him.”
“From Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Prince announced that he himself wrote a letter to Samdech Prime Minister Hun Sen. The Prince said that the letter, dated 29 June 2007, focuses on two contexts. First, the Prince expressed his happy feelings as he has learnt through Samdech Mae [the former Queen] and through King Preah Bat Samdech Preah Baromneath Norodom Sihamoni, that Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen told Samdech Mae and the King that he still pities and like the Prince (Samdech Krom Preah). The Prince continued that he told Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen that it is very difficult for him to accept the position of historical guide of Funcinpec, and especially also the insolent and rude words of Mr. Lu Laysreng, a Deputy Prime Minister and the first Vice-President of Funcinpec.
“According to Samdech Krom Preah’s statement, King Preah Bat Samdech Preah Baromneath Sihamoni spoke about Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen’s sympathy for the Prince, when the Prince met King Samdech Preah Baromneath in Paris recently.
“On 4 July, Samdech Krom Preah received another piece of news through Samdech Mae Norodom Monineath Sihanouk. The Prince told Rasmei Kampuchea, ‘I would like to inform you that this morning (4 July), Samdech Mae told me by phone that Samdech Hun Sen not only pities and likes me, but he also wants to help me.’
“With these expressions of happy feelings, Samdech Krom Preah also asked Samdech Hun Sen to help find justice for him, by making a judgment based on reason and evidence.
“Samdech Krom Preah again confirmed that it is difficult for him to accept the idea of the congress of 18 October 2006, when he was ousted from the position of president of Funcinpec, and then appointed as Historical Guide. Moreover, the Prince considers Mr. Lu Laysreng’s statement to be a major obstacle towards talking between officials of the Norodom Ranariddh Party and officials of Funcinpec. The Prince asked, ‘How can I accept the position of Historical President, as I heard Mr. Lu Laysreng’s bad and rude words about me?’
“Trying to seek a fair solution for both sides, Samdech Krom Preah Norodom Ranariddh had decided to allow Mr. Pok Than, one of his senior officials, to contact Mr. Keo Puth Rasmey, the President of Funcinpec. However, the Prince ordered the suspension of all negotiation after Mr. Lu Laysreng recently gave an interview by phone, and Samdech Krom Preah considers the interview to be an insult against him that is unacceptable.
“Under these circumstances, Deputy Prime Minister Lu Laysreng, the Vice-President of Funcinpec, said on 4 July that he agrees to apologize to Samdech Krom Preah, if his apology would please the Prince, leading to the return of the Prince into Funcinpec again.
“The Deputy Prime Minister told Rasmei Kampuchea by phone on the afternoon of 4 July, ‘We are not enemies. I can make a reconciliation.’ He continued that Funcinpec wants the Prince to reenter the party according to the party policy, first as Historical Guide. After that, there will be discussions whether the Prince has to do something else. He said that the Standing Committee of the party has a clear stance.
“As Samdech Krom Preah had become Historical Guide of Funcinpec through the [October 2006] congress, Mr. Lu Laysreng said that any change towards the Prince will also have to go through a [new] congress.
“Although Mr. Lu Laysreng softened his stance to apologize to the Prince, Samdech Krom Preah said, ‘I do not yet speak for the future. Let Funcinpec solve the issue with Mr. Lu Laysreng first.’
“As for Mr. Pok Than, who is appointed by Samdech Krom Preah to negotiate with Funcinpec, he said on the afternoon of 4 July that if there is an appropriate and acceptable solution, the discussion may resume. He said, ‘The door is still open, not closed.’
“He foresees a result towards an agreement if there are negotiations. He said, ‘In a brief discussion, we don’t have any disagreement.’” Rasmei Kampuchea, Vol.15, #4328, 5.7.2007
