Wednesday, 17.10.2007: Mr. Sar Kheng: Radio Free Asia Is Like My Breakfast

The Mirror, Vol. 11, No. 530

“Battambang: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Mr. Sar Kheng recalled publicly a meeting between the president of Radio Free Asia, who is a foreigner and himself, where he said, ‘I consider Radio Free Asia to be my breakfast.’ He added that if he fails to read newspapers and listen to the radio in the morning, it seems that he missed his breakfast.

“This was stated clearly by Mr. Sar Kheng in front of citizens who participated in the inauguration of two school buildings of ten rooms, donated by School Aid Japan, on 15 October 2007, as he presided over the official inauguration in Ou Ta Ki High School, Ou Ta Ki Commune, Thma Koul District, Battambang.

“With praise and criticism, Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Sar Kheng stated that on the morning of 15 October 2007, Radio Free Asia broadcasted a report saying, ‘Commune offices were asked to be separated from the offices of the Cambodian People’s Party [CPP].’ He stated that this report was wrong; however, such a broadcast implies that if the commune offices are near the CPP offices, it may confuse people and may give the CPP a possibility to put pressure on the commune authorities.

“Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Sar Kheng, the Minister of Interior, explained that during the history since 1979 there was only one party – i.e. the CPP. The party and the state were close to each other ever since then. But now, we also want to move both offices to be separated, if there is land for relocation, but if there is no land, what can we do? He stressed that being separated in location does not assure anything; the CPP could put pressure if it wanted to, but in fact it is not like that.

“Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Sar Kheng, the Minister of Interior, explained the source of the information which Radio Free Asia had broadcasted on the morning of 15 October 2007, saying that the present locations of the commune offices and the party offices are a result of the history, there is such a plan to move, but there are no funds available for moving. Moreover, commune offices built according to a new model have already been built and inaugurated; therefore the issue raised is not a major and important one.

“Accordingly, Mr. Sar Kheng also recalled that in the meeting with the president of Radio Free Asia he had said, ‘I would like to request Radio Free Asia to broadcast true reports, not false and unreliable ones.’

“He stated clearly to the public in Battambang that the authorities, officials, and the Royal Government want true information; if information is not true, it is not just useless, but it also destroys the reputation of the nation.” Kampuchea Thmey, Vol.6, #1468, 17.10.2007
