The Mirror, Vol. 11, No. 516
“The [US based] International Republican Institute [IRI] conducted a survey among well educated people in Cambodia and found that they have no confidence in Prime Minister Hun Sen’s leadership.
“The survey was conducted among students of lower secondary schools, high schools, colleges, universities, and among intellectuals, and it found that most of those surveyed said they have no confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Sen, because he speaks more than he does.
“The survey focused particularly on many failures in Mr. Hun Sen’s leadership, such as fighting corruption, use of violence, solving of land issues, suppression of peaceful demonstrations which are allowed by the Constitution, and the eviction of citizens to the suburbs in order to loot their land to sell and share it with his partisans.
“Ms. Pong Chiv Kek, the President of LICADHO [Dr. Kek Galabru, Cambodian League for the Promotion and Defense of Human Rights] agreed with the result of the survey for the point that Mr. Hun Sen speaks more than he does.
“The result of the survey says Mr. Hun Sen speaks much, for example, he released an order to crack down on gang members and to take action against officials and Oknhas [a title bestowed on a wealthy person who has donated at least US$100,000 to some charitable or socially relevant cause] who grab citizens’ land, but the order and the actions do not work, the suppression of illegal fishing does not work, and powerful and rich people are allowed to continue to grab the land of citizens.
“However, the survey was conducted only among those who are well educated, especially those who get appropriate information. But the citizens in rural areas are easy to be deceived by politicians, for example, some wicked politicians give them only Riel 3,000 [US$0.75] or Riel 5,000 [US$1.25], or one [piece of textile for a] sarong, or 300 grams of MSG [monosodium glutamate, as a food additive], and force them to take an oath – and they will vote for them by not understanding the value of their own vote, which may help them to live happily or to live in difficulty for the next five years.” Sralanh Khmer, Vol.3, #451, 13.7.2007
