Keo Puth Rasmei Gave the Green Light to Unite, but Requested Prince Norodom Ranariddh to Recognize the Congress of 18 October 2006 and to Agree to Having Been Sentenced to 18 Months in Prison
“Funcinpec gave a green light again to Prince Norodom Ranariddh on Saturday last week, but it requested him to accept two conditions beforehand: he has to recognize the last congress of Funcinpec of 18 October 2006, and he has to agree to having been sentenced to 18 months in prison by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court.
“Keo Puth Rasmei, the President of Funcinpec, said during the inauguration ceremony of the new headquarters located along Preah Norodom Boulevard, south of the Ministry of Interior, that Funcinpec has the intent to be united with the Norodom Ranariddh Party. Concerning the unification, Prince Norodom Ranariddh has to accept to be the historical guide; however, the Prince has also to recognize the congress of 18 October 2006 as an extraordinary congress, held according to the statute of Funcinpec. Funcinpec would also request that Prince Norodom Ranariddh agrees to have been sentenced to 18 months in prison by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court in March 2007.
“Keo Puth Rasmei, the new president of Funcinpec, a brother-in-law of Prince Norodom Ranariddh, explained that if Prince Norodom Ranariddh refused to recognize to have been sentenced by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on 13 March 2007, nobody could dare to write a letter to request a pardon for him, if he would not recognize to be guilty.
“After a request based on thumb-prints, asking King Norodom Sihamoni to pardon Prince Norodom Ranariddh, had been mentioned on Friday, it was rumored that in the meeting between the King and Prime Minister Hun Sen the topic of Prince Norodom Ranariddh was mentioned.
“Prince Norodom Ranariddh had publicly said that the congress [of last year] was organized by Nhek Bun Chhay, Keo Puth Rasmei, Lu Lay Sreng, and Prince Sisowath Sereyrath in violation of the statute of Funcinpec, as an act to seize power in the party. As for sentencing the Prince by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, Prince Norodom Ranariddh had criticized this, saying that it was an unfair and unjust trial.
“Recently, Prince Norodom Ranariddh inflated his ego like a flying balloon, when Lu Lay Sreng, the First Deputy President of Funcinpec, indicated that the party wanted the Prince to be again with Funcinpec. At that time, the Prince behaved displaying his pride, requesting Funcinpec to show its real conditions concerning this new move. However, it was an embarrassing disappointment that Funcinpec wanted Prince Norodom Ranariddh to remain only their historical guide who had no power in the party, as Funcinpec had decided in the extraordinary congress of 18 October 2006.
“It was noted that the congress, which was characterized as seizing the power of the party, propelled Prince Norodom Ranariddh to go far away from the political scene of Cambodia, and finally the Prince ended up by being sentenced to 18 months in prison by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, charged of a breach of trust.
“Regarding this condemnation, most Funcinpec members said that it was the result of politics of animosity between Funcinpec and the Cambodian People’s Party, to prevent the Prince from leading the Commune Council election campaign which was recently held, but it gave the Prince also the chance to live peacefully and happily with his unmarried partner abroad. In fact, Prince Norodom Ranariddh was never interested in his political life, besides indulging in his passions.
“In early May 2007, the Sangkum Jati Niyum party of Prince Thomico declared that it was merging with the Norodom Ranariddh Party, in a process of ‘unification of royalist forces,’ and if there were also cooperation from Funcinpec led by the group of Nhek Bun Chhay, then it would be even more hopeful. There was some hope for such a unification and cooperation, but because of the conflict between Prince Norodom Ranariddh and Nhek Bun Chhay, it became ashes and did not lead to a restoration as before. It showed that both the parties led by Prince Thomico, the Norodom Ranariddh Party, but also Funcinpec, do no longer have political values to cheat the Khmer citizens in future. Their political force is reduced to zero. Therefore, the party which can compete with the Cambodian People’s Party in the upcoming fourth-mandate election is the Sam Rainsy Party, which is the only party representing democracy, but not any royalist party led by those notorious leaders.” Moneaksekar Khmer, Vol.14, #3163, 21.5.2007
