“Phnom Penh: According to officials of the National Center of Maternal and Child Health, the rate of home births is increasing in Cambodia.
“Professor Koum Kanal, director of the National Center of Maternal and Child Health, said that the number of Cambodian women who delivered their babies in health centers and hospitals was below 10%. The delivery rate at home was more than 80%.
“Professor Koum Kanal revealed that while the delivery rate at home was increasing, there were not many properly trained midwives. Among the 80% of deliveries at home, only about 40% were assisted by properly trained midwives; previously, up to 90% were assisted by traditional midwives.
“There is a variety of reasons for not having babies delivered in health centers or hospitals. Professor Koum Kanal said that Cambodian women wanted to deliver their babies at home, because the health centers’ baby services could not meet their needs. Out of 962 health centers, only half of them were operational. Besides, there was a lack of midwives.
“Professor Koum Kanal added that 80% of the health centers had no midwives yet. He confirmed that at present, they lacked hundreds of midwives across the country. Considering this situation, he thanked Samdech Hun Sen for being aware of the lack of midwives, so that he authorized the public institutions to recruit many midwives for joining the health services for the people, especially for the women who wanted to deliver their babies assisted by properly trained midwives.
“Professor Koum Kanal said that he planned to provide also primary re-training for midwives, and hoped to reduce the lack of midwives.
“Even though the health centers could not respond to the people’s needs, and there was the lack of midwives, the mortality rate of children under one year and under five years declined dramatically.
“Professor Koum Kanal said that according to the data of the population survey of 2005, the mortality rate of under-one-year old children declined in 2000, whereas the mortality rate of under-five-year old children declined in 2005. He said that the reasons for the deaths of children were diarrhea, respiratory diseases, and malnutrition.” Kampuchea Thmey, Vol.6, #1263, 7.2.2007
