Samdech Hun Sen Awards Model Citizen Certificates to 17 Volunteers of Youth Star Cambodia

“Phnom Penh: Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen told the volunteers of the Youth Star Cambodia voluntary organization that their services help to implement the policies and the action plans of the Royal Government. He also appealed to donor countries to provide aid to this organization in order to encourage its volunteer activities.

“Samdech Hun Sen said this on the occasion of awarding Model Citizen Certificates s to 17 volunteers of Youth Star Cambodia on the morning of 8 January 2007 at the Cambodian-Japanese Cooperation Center, after they had worked for one year of volunteer services in remote rural area communities.

“He added that the volunteer activities of the youth in the communities resulted also in the collection many pieces of information, which are facts at the communities, and they reported them through their organization and shared them to the government and the relevant institutions to improve the action plans or the policies of the Royal Government.

“He also acknowledged, ‘The Royal Government doesn’t always do everything right. The action plans or policies set may be deficient, which cannot be avoided; therefore, they need to be adjusted. Thus, the volunteer services of the Youth Star Cambodia are not only a contribution at the local level, but they also contribute not only to the micro, but also to the macro framework. The micro framework is used to solve problems at the local level. As for the macro framework, it relates to the Royal Government and its relevant institutions to correct or to fix problems in order to solve them.’

He added that volunteer services are very good; if they can be strengthened, in this way the country can definitely be developed step by step.

“He appealed frankly to the Japanese Ambassador and the World Bank, whose representative attended the ceremony, to provide aid to Youth Star Cambodia. He went on to say that the activities of the organization are very good, because volunteers go to help the people directly at the local level. They know the difficulties of the people, they solve problems for the people, they help the nation with development and poverty alleviation

“The volunteers of the Youth Star Cambodia have done some important work at the local level in order to support the educational sector and youth development with advice and teaching children and youth. 60 volunteers are deployed in rural communities which do not receive sufficient services in Kompong Cham, Prey Veng, and Kratie.” Rasmei Kampuchea, Vol.15, #4180, 9.1.2007
