The Mirror, Vol. 11, No. 534
“Phnom Penh: Khiev Samphan, the former Khmer Rouge head of state, suffered from high blood pressure during the night 13 November. His health worries the Cambodian Government, so that Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen ordered to bring him by helicopter from Pailin to Phnom Penh for medical treatment.
“Khiev Ratana, Khiev Samphan’s daughter, said on the afternoon of 14 November that her father had had high blood pressure during the night of 13 November. During the night, he felt half paralyzed, but he gets better now.
“She continued that her father was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Phnom Penh for medical treatment. Now her father is in Calmette Hospital.
“Mr. Khiev Samphan’s health condition made Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen order this action, for fear that he might die. In a ceremony awarding certificates at the Asia-Europe University on 14 November, Samdech Dekchor Hun Sen said that he ordered a helicopter to be used to carry him from Pailin, in order to avoid any accusation against the government in case he dies. Samdech Dekchor went on to say that he has also to observe even the health of the Khmer Rouge leaders; or, if someone might do something against them, the government will be blamed and Samdech Hun Sen will be affected first.
“Khiev Samphan, the former head of state of the Democratic Kampuchea regime, suffered from high blood pressure only one day after Mr. Ieng Sary, the former Khmer Rouge minister of foreign affairs and his wife, were arrested from their villa on 12 November in Phnom Penh.
“According to a report from Pailin, Mr. Khiev Samphan, the former head of state of Democratic Kampuchea, suffered from high blood pressure at 10:30 a.m. on 14 November 2007; he was cared for by his family, doctors, and government officials, to carry him by helicopter for medical treatment to Calmette Hospital in Phnom Penh. His wife, children, and some friends also accompanied him.
“Mr. Chhuon Makara, the chief of the Cambodian Human Rights and Development Association in Pailin, told Rasmei Kampuchea on 14 November that at about 6 p.m. on 13 November 2007, when Mr. Khiev Samphan, 77, stood up from a hammock to sit down, he fell on the floor, and then he felt dizzy and was not able to speak, because his tongue got stiff. He has high blood pressure.
“After that, his family sought help; then doctors from the Pailin Referral Hospital arrived to help him. At midnight, doctors and an ambulance from the Battambang Referral Hospital also arrived to help.
“The doctors checked his health and gave him oxygen and injections. From the evening of 13 November to the morning of 14 November 2007, dozens of police and military police were deployed to protect his house and Mr. Khiev Samphan.
“Mr. Chhuon Makara continued that until 10:30 a.m. of 14 November 2007, Mr. Khiev Samphan was held back by Pailin officials and doctors from traveling from his house in Khlong, Ou Ta Vau, Pailin, by ambulance about four kilometres, before flying to Phnom Penh by helicopter, which had landed in Ou Praeus in Ou Ta Vau.
“Neighbours and the fimily members of Mr. Khiev Samphan said that before and after the arrest of Mr. Nuon Chea, Mr. Ieng Sary, and his wife Ms. Ieng Thirith, Mr. Khiev Samphan and his wife live in a house next to Road 57 in Khlong, Ou Ta Vau. Their children do not live with them, but their grandchildren and other relatives do.
“Mr. Khiev Samphan got high blood pressure and other old age sicknesses; so he had traveled to Phnom Penh for treatment three or four times. He travelled in his children’s car and by taxis which he trusts in terms of security and secrecy.
“Mr. Khiev Samphan and his wife So Socheat have four children. The oldest son, Khiev Dom, has a wife and children and they live in Onlong Veng, Oddar Meanchey. Their second daughter Khiev Ratana, called Thay, continues her studies in a private higher education institution and lives in Phnom Penh. As for her two younger siblings who live with Khiev Ratana – her sister Khiev Maly, and her youngest brother, Khiev Vordet, they are studing in a high school in Phnom Penh. Mr. Khiev Samphan’s house is surrounded with barbed wire and decorated with flowers. Inside the house, there are no equipements and no food which could be considered to be part of a modern and rich lifesyle.” Rasmei Kampuchea, Vol.15, #4437, 15.11.2007
