Vol. 11, No. 493, Friday, 2.2.2007
“Phnom Penh: A group of journalists wrote an open letter on 1 February 2007, with their signatures and the names of the journalists and of other news agencies, relating to Mr. Keng Vansak, a former professor of Khmer literature, who described the history wrongly. The content of the letter follows:
“‘We, all journalists, reject the description by Professor Keng Vansak, who lives in France, who gave a radio interview with Mr. Sam Borin, a program coordinator of Radio Free Asia, which affects Khmer history, especially it distorts the history relating to Preah Bat Jayavarman VII.’
“‘Recently, Professor Keng Vansak affirmed through a Radio Free Asia broadcast [in Khmer], that Preah Bat Jayavarman VII, whom Khmer citizens observe, respect, and consider to be a great heroic king who governed the country, bringing about a prosperous period. However, Professor Keng Vansak claimed that King Jayavarman VII is half of Cham ethnic parentage, a cruel king, and the king who gave the land of Sukhothai to the Siamese [Thais].’
“‘The wrong information broadcasted about the history of, and the accusations against Preah Bat Jayavarman VII, whom the Khmer citizens consider to be a great heroic king, who is to be respected and revered with gratitude forever, seriously affects the feelings of Khmer citizens and denigrates the Khmer Royal family.’
“‘Therefore, as journalists, we would like to ask Radio Free Asia to recheck the interview they broadcasted with Professor Keng Vansak, and it would be better if Radio Free Asia would invite another professor for an interview, who is an expert and has real knowledge about Khmer history, and broadcast it to Khmer citizens.'” Rasmei Kampuchea, Vol.15, #4201, 2.2.2007
