Vang Sreyno’s Alleged Pornographic Film and Arrest of Reporters
“Phnom Penh: Two newspaper editors were arrested by the police while taking a pornographic film to extort money from Vang Sreyno, a singer and karaoke video actress, claiming that the actress in the erotic film was Ms. Vang Sreyno.
“Mr. Keo Thea, deputy chief of the Phnom Penh Municipal Police Anti-Human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection Department, confirmed to Rasmei Kampuchea in the afternoon of 13 January 2007, according to the complaint by the singer and actress Vang Sreyno, that a man called her to make an appointment with her, in order to show her a pornographic film, claiming that it was the actress Vang Sreyno who had sex with a foreign man. In addition, the police assumed and concluded that they might be showing the photos to extort money.
“Mr. Keo Thea claimed that according to the situation in the morning of 13 January 2007, the actress Vang Sreyno had met the man as appointed, with the police who watched over the action from behind in order to clearly observe the event. While the actress Vang Sreyno was meeting and speaking with these two men, the police requested the authorization from people at the top to detain these two men for interrogation at the police headquarters.
“Mr. Keo Thea added that following the interrogation, ‘we just knew that these two men were Kuch Konthea, editor-in-chief of Sangkum Cheat and Ruom Kamlang, and Kaing Samnang, editor-in-chief of Seub Kar.’ Meanwhile, the police examined the photos depicting a woman having sex with a foreign man, but it was not Vang Sreyno, because some scars shown, and the teeth, mouth, and eyebrows were different. ‘But if you did not know the actress Vang Sreyno, you could be confused.’ Mr. Keo Thea added that following the examination, the police concluded that the woman in the sex photos was a foreign woman, maybe a Korean or a Japanese; definitely it was not a Khmer woman.
“According to the examination of the photos and the character of the actress Vang Sreyno, Mr. Keo Thea was sure that the actress had not performed these indecent acts. Therefore, to do away with the sex film, the police would continue to search for the source of these photos to destroy the source according to general principles of the police.
“Related to the fate of the two newspaper editors, Mr. Keo Thea stated that they had not yet decided this case, but he had to await for a decision from people at the top.
“Pen Samitthi, the president of the Club of Cambodian Journalists, said that he protested against arresting the reporters while they performed duties as journalists. He appealed to the authorities to release these journalists if there is no clear proof that they tried to extort money from the singer Vang Sreyno.
“He also took the opportunity to suggest to his journalists colleagues to act strictly adhering to the journalists’ Code of Ethics and avoid performing their duties in an illegal way, affecting the journalists’ reputation and the image of Cambodian newspapers. He said, ‘Journalists should not be arrested when they perform their duties professionally. But we also must also be socially responsible. Therefore, all journalists should observe the Code of Ethics.’” Rasmei Kampuchea, Vol.15, 4185, 14.01.2007
