The Mirror, Vol. 11, No. 533
“The Sam Rainsy Party leader stated that his party will submit to the National Assembly a draft law appealing for the prime ministerial term to be one term only.
“The Sam Rainsy Party officially decided that the restriction of one term for a prime minister will also be included in the regulations of the party. A meeting of the Steering Committee of the Sam Rainsy Party is expected to be held this week for a final decision. Mr. Sam Rainsy said that they want to give a chance to other people of the next generation who are highly educated. When a person holds all power, it means that they look down on other well-educated people. The president of the opposition party added that one term is enough for a prime minister.
“However, Mr. Khieu Kanharith, the government spokesperson and Minister of Information, said that the idea of the Sam Rainsy Party is not supported by the ruling Cambodian People’s Party. He said that the process of selecting a prime minister at the present time is fully democratic. He added that any change at the present time related to the position of prime minister would cause instability. He said that a change of leaders would cause complications.” Sralanh Khmer, Vol.3, #544, 6.11.2007
