Thursday, 1.11.2007: Samdech Hun Sen Wants Stronger Promotion for Industry and Services, more than for Agriculture

The Mirror, Vol. 11, No. 532

“Phnom Penh: Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen of the Royal Government of Cambodia showed that he wants stronger promotion for services and the industry than for agriculture in order to promote national economic growth.

“During a ceremony of awarding certificates to students of the Cambodian University of Specialties on the morning of 30 October 2007 at the National Institute of Education, Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen noticed that there were two changes in the 1980ies and the 1990ies which made Khmer citizens know how to do business and services, while previously the sellers and traders were all Chinese, or it can be said that also people of mixed Khmer-Chinese ancestry could do business.

“Samdech Prime Minister presented his view that industry and services play bigger roles than agriculture in promoting national economic growth. Samdech Hun Sen showed the figures that agriculture contributes to the GDP approximately 32%, industry 25%, and services 36%.

“In 1993, industry contributed 12.7% to the GDP, and now this is increased to more than 25% of the GDP. In 1993, agriculture contributed approximately 45% to the GDP, but now it is approximately 32%. As for industry in 1994, it contributed more than 11% of the GDP, but now it increased to 36%.

“Samdech Prime Minister said that we want to promote the industry and the services to increase in their share of the GDP and agriculture to decrease. Samdech Prime Minister continued that we want agriculture to be at 10% of the GDP, industry at 40%, and services at 50%.

“Samdech Prime Minister went on to say that we cannot have economic growth through agriculture, but only through industry and services, which can promote national economic growth fast. Countries that have high economic growth depend on industry, trade, and services; as for agriculture, it contributes only a small part.” Rasmei Kampuchea, Vol.15, #4425, 1.11.2007
