FUNCINPEC WANTS PRINCE THOMICO TO LEAVES THE PARTY, BUT HE WILL DEFINITELY NOT LEAVE

“Phnom Penh: Another new rumor said on the afternoon of 2 November that Samdech Euv [the Father King] will establish a new party in the near future.

“This rumor made major officials of some political parties surprised, and they denied that it is true.

“It is remembered that Samdech Euv [the Father King] had often said and also published his messages that he will no longer enter politics, because he is old. On every holy day, Samdech Euv always invites monks to perform Buddhist ceremonies, and he sets free birds in the Royal Palace, but some individuals often create hearsay about him, though he stays silently away from politics.

“The present rumor went around at the same time when Prince Thomico strongly criticized the present leaders of Funcinpec.

“A Funcinpec official said that the rumor, which said that Samdech Euv will establish a new party, is probably created by Prince Thomico. However, Prince Thomico hastily denied this, saying that he does not know anything about it.

“Prince Thomico said that if anyone accused him and links him to the rumor, this is very serious, because he knows nothing. Preah Mohavirak Khsatr [the Great Heroic King] has often said and released his messages that he will not participate in politics; why do they still create such rumors?

“Mr. Khieu Kanharith, the government spokesperson, told Kampuchea Thmey that he has not heard the rumor yet, but he thinks that it is not true.

“Mr. Khieu Kanharith explained the reason for his opinion, based on the law, as our Constitution gives freedom to all citizens in general to establish a political party; but regarding Preah Mohavirak Khsatr, he is part of a special entity, the highest institution of the nation. Thus, if he really creates a political party, he has to have his royal title as Preah Mohavirak Khsatr removed and leave the Royal Palace, because this institution is independent, neutral, and not involved in politics.

“Mr. Khieu Kanharith continued, ‘I think the rumor mentioned above is created by someone in order to gain their own political benefits; however, there is no doubt about that Samdech Euv has said publicly, and he has released his messages, telling all his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren [the Cambodian citizens] that he will not enter politics, but he stays as the comfortable shade for every citizen.’

“Mr. Nov Sovatharo, the spokesperson of Funcinpec, said that he has not yet heard this rumor, which someone has created. Mr. Nov Sovatharo assumes that the person who created this rumor is probably not very far away. He said, ‘I think the hearsay must have been created with the intention to gain benefit for something.”

“Mr. Nov Sovatharo stated that the rumor cannot be true because Samdech Euv has already stated his position to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren about this issue.

“Another separate case is that Funcinpec plans to ask Prince Thomico to resign as a member of Funcinpec, rather than to expel him from the party, which would embarrass him. Mr. Nov Sovatharo told Kampuchea Thmey that Prince Thomico is seriously guilty. He makes mistakes again and again, and he likes to act and to speak contrary to the party’s statute. For example, he said that Funcinpec uses a princess to combat a prince; we have not done anything like what he said, and we also do not have to have them combat each other like crickets.

“As for Prince Thomico himself, he said that he will not resign by himself, but if Funcinpec wants to expel him they should do so.” Kampuchea Thmey, Vol.6, #1483, 3.11.2007
