Wednesday, 5.9.2007: Ministry of Information Doesn’t Allow Creation of Further FM Radio Stations

The Mirror, Vol. 11, No. 524

“Phnom Penh: Minister of Information Mr. Khieu Kanharith responded on 30 August to a request for the creation of a radio station by Mr. Pa Nguon Teang, Director of the Cambodian Center for Independent Media. In a letter, the minister said that the ministry has suspended all requests for starting radio and television stations for live broadcasts in all provinces and towns, waiting for the audio-visual law to be passed, following the announcement No. 121/50, dated 20 April 2005. Moreover, at the present time, there have been so many radio and television stations in provinces and towns beyond the needs in the regions, which always disturb the airwaves from Phnom Penh and also at the local level.

“On 2 August [Rasmei Kampuchea says 22 August], Mr. Pa Nguon Teang submitted a request to the Ministry of Information, stating that the Cambodian Center for Independent Media is an independent media organization that promotes human rights and democracy and supports freedom of expression by planning to broadcast a radio program called Voice of Democracy; it has been doing its broadcasting so far by hiring broadcasting hours of different radio stations in Phnom Penh and in some provinces, in order to participate in the promotion of democracy and the respect for human rights, and to provide Cambodian citizens from all political tendencies the chance to express their opinions through different programs of the Voice of Democracy.” Koh Santepheap, Vol.40, #6136, 5.9.2007
